Green is associated with nature. Chlorophyll is the photosynthetic pigment found in plants that allows them to have a calming hue.
Green has been around since the beginning of time. Didn't come so naturally to those who tried to manufacture it's pigment. Its pigments were poisonous.
However green still represents; regeneration and rebirth.
Green was originally made by Ancients Romans. They would soak up copper plates in wine to create verdigris- a green pigment that comes after weathering the metal. This is the same pigment that you see on statues and old coins.
Red= Noble
White, Brown, Grey= Peasants
Green= Bankers, merchants, gentry.
During this time green was made from natural materials such as plants but colours would fade over time.
Toxic Green
In 1775, Swedish chemist Carl Wilhelm Scheele made a toxic green hue with arsenide. "Scheele's Green" was so popular it replaced all other pigments. However, it came with a price. It was deadly.
It was used on paper, wall hangings, fabrics and children's toys.
Reports of children becoming sick from their bright green rooms and women would feel ill from the vapurs produce from the green pigment in their dresses.
In late 19th century, a similar pigment known as Paris Green over took Scheele's Green. But this new pigment was still just as toxic and was later banned in 1960.
Green is now a symbol of regeneration, growth, renewal.
